Now merely an oft misplaced cold-weather accessory, gloves were once a fundamental element of a proper gentleman or ladyâs attire. Gloves were designed for specific occasions, and etiquette determined which gloves should be worn by whom, and when. Once wardrobe staples, by the mid-twentieth century, gloves had largely gone out of fashion, making appearances only at high-society functions and on the hands of style-making celebrities such as Michael Jackson and Madonna.
The glove has long been a symbol of love and courtship, however. Back in the time of royal kingdoms, a knight would ask his lady for her glove to keep beneath his helmet during battle, promising to protect it with his life. In the sixteenth century, if a man sent a woman gloves, it was considered a marriage proposal. If she wore them, it meant sheâd accepted.
In the late 1700s, it became customary for a gentleman to give gloves to his sweetheart as a Valentineâs gift that she would later wear on Easter Sunday. Ladies eager to receive a pair let their Valentines know by reciting the verse:
âGood-morrowValentine, I go today;
To wear for you, what you must pay;
A pair of gloves next Easter Day.â
